Library War (図書館戦争, Toshokan Sensō) is a Japanese light novel series written by Hiro Arikawa and illustrated by Sukumo Adabana. The series consists of four novels, with only the first titled *Toshokan Sensō*; the others are *Toshokan Nairan*, *Toshokan Kiki*, and *Toshokan Kakumei*. MediaWorks published them between February 2006 and November 2007. A spin-off series, *Bessatsu Toshokan Sensō* (Supplement: Library War), has two volumes published by ASCII Media Works. Two manga adaptations were released by Hakusensha and ASCII Media Works. A 12-episode anime by Production I.G aired on Fuji TV's Noitamina block from April to June 2008. Two Internet radio shows hosted by the anime's voice actors began in April 2008 to promote the series. An anime film from Production I.G came out on June 16, 2012. A live-action film was released on April 27, 2013, followed by a sequel on October 10, 2015. By April 2008, the original four novels and the first spin-off volume had sold over 1.25 million copies in Japan. In 2008, the series won the 39th Seiun Award for Best Japanese Long Work.
The story is set in an alternate Japan where the Media Betterment Act (MBA) was passed in 1989, allowing censorship of media deemed harmful. The fictional Seika calendar begins that year, so 2019 is Seika 31. Local governments opposed to the MBA created armed defense units to protect libraries under the Freedom of the Libraries Law, leading to ongoing conflict with Media Betterment Committee (MBC) agents. The plot draws on Japan's 1954 Statement on Intellectual Freedom in Libraries (amended 1979), with the series' "Freedom of the Library Law" having five chapters: freedom to collect materials, freedom to offer them, user privacy, categorical opposition to improper censorship, and a pledge by librarians to secure that freedom when threatened. The protagonist, Iku Kasahara, joins the Kantō Library Base in 2019 after a high-ranking defense force member saved a book she wanted from censorship. She finds training demanding and feels her drill instructor, Atsushi Dojo, targets her with extra work.
