Schell Bullet was published by Kunihiko Ikuhara following the release of Adolescence of Utena and shortly before his relocation from Tokyo to Los Angeles. The novel was Ikuhara's first project during his twelve-year hiatus from directing anime, which lasted from the conclusion of Revolutionary Girl Utena in 1999 to the release of Penguindrum in 2011. Ikuhara and Nagano promoted the novel at a Newtype event by cosplaying as Sailor Mars and Sailor Venus from Sailor Moon, a series Ikuhara had directed.

The story's society is divided into Majors, intersex humans who monopolize stronger genetic material, and Minors, who are dual-sex. Ikuhara stated he made the Majors intersex to create 'a race which combines the good parts of both women and men.' The protagonist, Ors Break, is hired by Balt Liner Corporation to pilot a schell by claiming to be a Major; when his Minor status is revealed, he negotiates with his Major superior Delbee Ibus to continue working.

The novel was released in two volumes: Aden Arabie (1999) and Abraxas (2000), both published by Kadokawa Shoten. The books include illustrations and diagrams of the schells by Mamoru Nagano. A concept album, Schell Bullet: Thanaphs 68, was composed by Tenpei Sato with vocals from Ikuhara and Maria Kawamura; its liner notes feature a photograph of Ikuhara in a leather bodysuit with a spiked corset.
